It is really long process to convert the files in .avi format and I dont believe people have so much free time to spare. And there is a huge difference in between the avi and mkv files in comparison of file size and quality (even colors seem to be different).

I prefer mkv file rather than avi cause of its HD quality but you must use appropriate codec and media player.

Vlc player can be used to play mkv files, right?
I'm now downloading mkv files for the anime that I want, they don't have avi files. I'm too lazy to convert them...

I personally loved VLC...now I hate it.

Suppose VLC is decent for .avi files but with all the .mkv I have now, it just doesnt seem to play smoothly anymore.
Now I'm a major fan and supporter of media player classic (the K-Lite Mega codec pack). Its played every file i'v thrown at it from a 360p .avi file to a 1080p .mkv file.

If you dont mind downloading 60mb +- then id recommend mpc.

VLC has been great for a long time, but with the current upgrades, there have been some issues with playing .mkv files. It's usually my main player, but now I can't use it as often. T_T
You can still try it out though.

Mine's just REALLY slow when opening .mkv files, like, it takes about 2 full minutes until the video opens. Honestly...that's a long time compared to 2 milliseconds that it used to take, so now I have to use quicktime. I have a mac, so i'm not open to as many options when it comes to players.
