This particular scene came from the end of the movie WXIII ~ Patlabor The Movie 3. This is my 6th viewing of this movie.
The artificial monster WXIII is lured into Budokan Arena and faced off the labors from SV2. The mother/creator of WXIII, Saeko watched the ensuing battle as Beethoven's Sonata fur Klavier Nr.8 Pathetique Adagio cantabile played in the background. When the cannon round containing the virus was fired into the maw of WXIII, Saeko let herself fall from the precarious beam she was standing just as WXIII fell from the shot. Although Hata reached out just in time to grab one of her hand, it was clear that he wouldn't be able to hold her for long. Just as WXIII was in its death throes, Saeko's hand slips slowly away, a small drizzle was starting to fall and Kusumi threw his crutch away in frustration, all the while Beethoven's sorrowful tune echoed hollowly in the background.
The beautiful part in this scene is the portraying of the will to live slowly fading away in Saeko as she watches her 'child' dying. She made no effort to hold on to Hata's hand and seemingly wishing to let her limp body fall, just wanting to end it all, the sorrow, the irony, the solitude, the tiredness and the feeling of helplessness in face of the overwhelming-ness of fate. One couldn't help but think that all this tragedy might be avoided if Saeko had met Hata sooner, but fate just won't have it that way and by the time they met, Saeko is simply beyond the point of no return. Beethoven's piano solo really amplified the atmosphere superbly here, to the point it almost brought tears to my eyes, something I haven't experienced for a long time now...
Although not directed by Mamoru Oshii like the first two movies and often said to be average, in my humble opinion, this movie shines in its own way, a rare kind of jewel in the mecha/action genre. True the story might be a bit slow but it also contained some of the best mecha actions ever, solid and realistic, not the flashy type usually associated with the genre. I highly recommend it, simply because it's hauntingly beautiful.
