The recent conclusion of Gundam 00 series reminds me of one of the best scene ever (in my opinion ne) in the Gundam universe. It's from the 1991-1992 Gundam 0083 OVA & movie in which Delaz Fleet's Anavel Gato (The Nightmare of Solomon) used the nuclear-armed tactical mobile suit he hijacked from the Federation, Gundam GP02 'Physalis' to single-handedly wiped out/ disabled two third of the Federation space fleet (including the flagship 'Birmingham' and it's arrogant admiral) as well as seriously damaging the Federation base/ asteroid 'Konpeito' (called 'Solomon' when it was occupied by Zeon). Truly one of the most beautiful scene of destruction ever, this purge of Federation filth from the sanctity of Zeon home space. Another memorable scene came at the very end, when the critically wounded Gato, instead of surrendering to the encroaching Federation forces, opted to kamikaze the heavily damaged Neue Ziel into the enemy fleet to clear a path for some of his troop to escape to the Axis fleet. A warrior's end, if there is ever one... I can't help but salute him...
Gato is my favorite MS pilot after Char Aznable, honorable, loyal, completely dedicated to his ideals, a caring leader for his troop and has an indomitable fighting spirit. A true samurai of a pilot. Plus he is one of the few antagonists in Gundam universe that continuously kick the s**t out of the main lead. If a man's life is to be judged on his deeds, then he had truly lived his life to the fullest, worthy of a place among the fallen warriors at Valhalla. He baptized me into an eternal Zeon loyalist. Sieg Zeon!!!

Time for another 'memorable moment' talk/ rant on the Gundam universe (sheesh... like anyone want to know
, and no, Bandai/Sunrise didn't pay me anything
)... This time it's in the OVA Gundam 0080 ~ War in the Pocket, a side story set at the end of the One Year War in a out-of-the-way space colony where the Federation was secretly developing the Gundam 'Alex' NT-1 as an eventual replacement for Amuro Ray's battled RX-78-2 Gundam.
The 'memorable moment' in question comes at the end of the last episode (episode 6), when Zeon rookie pilot Bernard Wiseman (a.k.a. Bernie) used his hastily field repaired Zaku II Fz (armed only with a heat hawk) to take down the vastly superior Gundam 'Alex' NT-1, which is piloted by its test pilot Christina MacKenzie, in order to divert an in bound nuclear attack ordered by Colonel Killing to destroy the new Gundam along with the peaceful colony. The duel ended with both suits dealing heavy damages to each other and the Zaku sliced off the Gundam head as the Gundam plunged its beam saber into the Zaku cockpit (with Bernard dying, of course
). Christina only suffered minor injuries...
The factors that made this OVA great is that, instead of your usual god-like hero/ heroine, Bernie is just a typical rookie pilot, not skillful, not brave (bordering on cowardice), like to brag a little, like to run away from problem, a little selfish i.e. just a normal human who isn't meant to be a soldier (he has a few good points though, such as not being angsty, loud or brick-headed, like you know who(s)). But when he learnt of Zeon's planned nuclear attack, he returned to the defend of the colony as well as his young friend, Alfred, who believed in him and looked up to him as a big brother as well as an ace pilot that he was not. Another factor that made this series stand out is the realistic portrayal of war and its tragic consequences (instead of the usual glorification of mass-murderers), Bernie did not know his love interest Christina is the Gundam test pilot while Christina did not know that she had killed her love interest, not even till the end when she left the colony for earth (as Alfred just told her that Bernie had left)... two lovers killing each other unknowingly for nothing (just for the foolish/pointless power struggles of ruthless politicians)... Bernie, one of the more tragic but lovable characters from Gundam universe but also one of the first to show that you don't need to be an ace to take out a Gundam, just your fighting spirit and determination. Ok, enough Gundam rant for now, if you've read till here, many thanks for your patience... Cheers![bye smiley of bye]()
