Would help if we knew what kind of anime you've watched so far that you liked?
Code Geass and Code Geass 2, its continuation.
Most of the light novel based ones above usually have solid backgrounds for the setting and characters that makes them worth watching, although they it isn't always depicted well in the anime version.
The long running series like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece are easy to watch although a bit formulaic in my opinion.
If you want to try something like Code Geass, then maybe 'Tytania' might interest you?

Well, I wouldn't rate it as good as Code Geass. The theme is about the differing views of Imperialist or Democratic? (maybe individualist) rule. You have the main character eventually going up against the Imperialists in a few space battles (so no cool Knightmares here).
The thing I like about this anime is that there is no inherently good or bad side and you can get to like characters on both sides.
Since the series is alot shorter than Code Geass you won't have the same depth to the characters or amount of action but it does/should leave you thinking about what makes an organisation or government good or bad, just as Code Geass does.
By the way, don't expect a conclusive ending where one side wins as in Code Geass. Whether this is on purpose or not, I have no idea though.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Mushi-Shi, Mononoke (the series not Princess Mononoke), Gankutsuo AKA The Count of Monte Cristo (in SPACE), and Revolutionary Girl Utena are all amazing shows, though you may want to watch Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales before you watch Mononoke.
